‘Her’

An exploration of self

The purpose of this body of work is to feel more in tune with the femininity within ourselves and those around us. Being vulnerable and sensitive is often perceived as ‘weak’ in a patriarchal society, but there is a power in gentleness and stillness.

Feminine strength can be harnessed when we embrace our feelings, emotions and empathy towards others. We can empower ourselves by being open to the world around us, listening to the trees, the call from nature and all feminine forces around us. This allows for a softening within us. Be open to the empowering forces of ‘Her’.

Anne’s body of work is created using tapestry cotton found in an op shop, and her deconstructed TAFE calico toiles. The textiles and cotton thread used in the weavings and artworks are coloured with plant dyes like avocado pits, carrot tops, etc. resulting in beautiful intense vibrant colours. Weaving and sewing are the artist's two favourite mediums and help her with quieting her chattering brain. Working with two different mediums is a necessity for her. Weaving is an intuitive practice whereas sewing brings a lot of planning. Combining these two creates a sense of balance in her practice.
